It is estimated that more than two million seniors are abused in the United States every year, and only one in five cases are ever reported.

Last year, the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department’s Adult Protective Services Division received over 10,000 reports of possible adult abuse, and conducted 6,236 investigations of abuse of adults age 18 and older.

A total of 56 percent of the cases that were investigated and substantiated involved adults age 60 or older, with the largest segment of victims (40 percent) being adults age 70 or older.

The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse has designated a World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This annual observation recognizes, honors, and raises awareness of disabled adults and older persons who suffer abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
